2021 FASHION TRENDS

I It’s a new year and that means new fashion trends. With so many options available, ciphering through the trends and determining which ones you need to try and the ones you can skip can be a little tedious. I have created this trend report based on world issues, and what major brands and retailers are producing. Some of these trends are a little over the top, like the extravagant shoulders. But don’t be discouraged because tons of high-street retailers have created more wearable options which I have included links below. I know being on trend is not necessarily the most important thing for most right now. My hope is that this post serves as some form of relief from all the madness. If you decide to shop, I hope that this post will help you determine what to add to your wardrobe.

TREND: ELEVATED LOUNGEWEAR

Let’s be honest, Covid numbers are not going down and history has shown us that it takes up to two years for these viruses to run their course. With that said we are going to continue to see loungewear as a major fashion trend. The only difference is that people are getting tired of living in sweats 24/7 hence loungewear will become more elevated. We will see dressier pieces that can easily transition from lounging at home to heading out while practicing social distancing.

TREND: WIDE LEG PANTS

Wide leg pants or trousers are a continuation of loungewear. We will see a more relaxed wide leg pant that is comfortable and easy to wear. I personally love this as I find working in a wide-leg dress pant at home to be the most comfortable yet dressy option for my work-from home outfits.

TREND: PASTEL & NEUTRAL COLORS

There are two major color trends that we won’t be able to avoid this year. They are pastels and neutral colors. We saw a ton of neutrals in 2020 and we will continue to see browns, beiges, greys and off-white in 2021. In addition to seeing these beautiful warm hues, cool pastel colors are going to make a huge style impact. Airy yellows, pinks, blues and greens will be made in every silhouette possible and that includes accessories.

STRUCTURE SHOULDER BAGS

The structure shoulder bag is not a trend that I particularly love, but it is the one bag trend that I have noticed is making a big impact. A lot of the bag trends from 2020 such as the oversized clutch, top handle bag etc., will continue to make waves in 2021, however the structure shoulder bag continues to make its way to the top and will be a trend you can’t ignore in 2021.

TREND: EXTRAVAGANT SHOULDERS

The more elaborate the better. That pretty much sums up the extravagant shoulder trend. This trend is a continuation of the padded shoulder that saw so much success in 2019 and 2020. In 2021, brands like Balmain decided to take the trend up a notch and fashion brands such as Zara and ASOS followed suit. This trend is over the top but still wearable thanks to high-street brands that believe we should be able to wear the biggest fashion trends for everyday life.

TREND: A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Fashion never fails to mimic Hollywood trends, and with the widespread popularity of shows such as Bridgerton, it’s not surprising that fashion in 2021 is borrowing from the 1800s. This year get ready for singed waistlines, ruffle details, Victorian necklines, fuller skirts and corsets.

TREND: NETTING

Netting is an interesting trend. I have to say I am surprisingly in love with this trend thanks to brands such as Dior that have done an excellent job of making this overly trendy look wearable. Highstreet retailers such as H&M have created affordable versions of this trend making it a trend, we can all participate in. Get ready guys, because netting is a must-try trend that will be available in everything from shoes, bags and more.

TREND: THE JUXTAPOSITION OF MASCULINE & FEMININE

The Juxtaposition of masculine and feminine is a trend that continues to stay relevant. More and more women want to look and feel powerful as suiting continues to evolve to accommodate the modern woman. Boxy blazers with fitted waistlines, oversized blazers worn with crop tops and other feminine fabrics such as lace, will continue to be relevant and on trend in 2021.

TREND: 80’S INSPIRED JEANS

There are two major denim trends from the 80s that have made their way into 2021 and they are the wide leg cut and the straight leg cut. The first time I saw the high-rise wide leg denim on the Chanel runway late 2020, I knew it would be a major trend, hence my hunt for the perfect pair began. I actually found the perfect pair at Zara. A high-rise straight leg pair of jeans are stylish and pair perfectly with anything they are worn with.

TREND: CUT-OUTS

Cutouts can be a bit much. If you are like me and you don’t find joy in showing off your lower stomach, this trend can be a bit much. However, there are quite a few designers and retailers that are offering the trend in more wearable options. Cutouts at the back or below the bust-line are easier to wear and don’t show off the stomach.

TREND: CAPES

Capes are a classic, but they tend to blend into the shadows every now and then. This year we will see a resurgence of this classic trend and the return of the cape silhouette not only in outerwear but in dresses, tops and other silhouettes.

TREND: SHOW UP AND SHOW OUT

My hope for 2021 is that we will be able to see some kind of normalcy towards the end of the year, hence I predict that fashion towards the end of the year will be all about showing up and showing out! Sequins, furs, metallics, the more flamboyant the better. The idea is to celebrate the return to normalcy hence we will use our clothing to express the joy of being able to gather in groups once again.
